Statistics on physicians in Norway (English version)
As of 5th of August 2010, 23,547 physicians and 3,588 medical students are members of The Norwegian Medical Association, bringing the total to 27,135 members.
Among the 23,547 physicians-members, about 23,180 are in Norway (including retired physicians), 20,640 of whom are under 67 years of age.
Including retired physicians and non-members there are totally about 24,050 physicians in Norway, of which at least 96.4 % are members.
There are totally about 21,370 physicians under 67 years in Norway (including non-members). Among these are:
- 43.7 % women (44.0 % of members, 34.2 % of specialists and 53.9 % of non-specialists)
- 51.5 % approved specialists (52.4 % of members, 60.3 % of men and 40.2 % of women, 51.1 % among Norwegian citizens and 53.1 % among foreign citizens, highest for EU-countries before 1st May 2004 outside of the Nordic countries with 65.0 %, and lowest for countries outside of EU/EEA with 37.9)
- 15.9 % foreign citizens (14.6 % of members, 16.2 % of specialists and 15.3 % of non-specialists). That is 3,397 foreign citizens, of which 1,214 from the Nordic countries (of which 622 from Sweden, 417 from Denmark, 106 from Iceland and 69 from Finland), 1,120 from EU-countries before 1st May 2004 outside of the Nordic countries (of which 811 from Germany and 109 from Netherlands), 355 from the 10+2 new EU-countries (of which 118 from Poland, 58 from Lithuania, 54 from Hungary, 36 from Bulgaria and 26 from Romania), 14 from Switzerland and 694 from countries outside of EU/EEA/Switzerland (of which 89 from Serbia, 85 from Russia, 85 from Iraq and 61 from Bosnia Herzegovina).
- 96.6 % members of The Norwegian Medical Association (96.2 % of men and 97.1 % of women, 98.3 % of approved specialists and 94.8 % of non-specialists, 98.0 % of Norwegian citizens and 89.2 % of foreign citizens)
There are currently 230 citizens per physician under 67 years of age in Norway, or 4.34 physicians per 1 000 citizens, more than in the other Nordic countries (source: Physicians in the Nordic Countries 2008). Within the OECD, only Greece has clearly more physicians per head of population than Norway, while it is about equally high in Belgium, Italy, Spain and Switzerland (source: OECD Health Data 2010).
