Blodplatetransfusjoner kan være assosiert med komplikasjoner og risiko. Vurderinger av behovet for å transfundere blodplater bør basere seg på årsaken til trombocytopenien, komorbiditet, blødningsvurdering og evt. tilstedeværelse av risikofaktorer for blødning.
