Avoid conducting spirometry that is not based on a risk assessment of workplace exposure

22. JULI 2025

Rationale

Spirometry as part of occupational health assessments in occupational medicine and occupational health services should be based on a risk assessment and be relevant for preventing or detecting lung disease caused by workplace exposure. Examples include exposure to welding fumes in welding work or stone dust in tunnel work.

Spirometry is particularly relevant when evaluating symptoms and respiratory issues related to such exposures.

Spirometry in occupational health assessments should align with the Working Environment Act and its regulations, occupational medicine guidelines, and ethical considerations.

Spirometry conducted as part of a health certificate examination of workers in occupations with legally mandated health requirements is not covered by this recommendation.
