Rationale:
Most patients with chronic pain that is not caused by cancer or active inflammation should not receive continuous pain medication. Counseling and education about the pain condition are often sufficient, including guidance on exercise and pain management.
When considering pharmacological treatment, the benefits must be weighed against side effects, the risk of addiction, and the potential for medication-induced worsening of pain.
