Avoid prophylactic platelet transfusions in asymptomatic thrombocytopenic patients with chronic bone marrow failure who are not receiving intensive chemotherapy. Exercise particular restraint in the end-of-life phase

9. JUNI 2026

Rationale:

Studies of different transfusion practices support a restrictive transfusion strategy. Such an approach reduces transfusion reactions and alloimmunization, alleviates shortages of platelet concentrates, and lowers costs and staffing demands. Platelets have a short lifespan, necessitating frequent transfusions. This results in repeated travel to the hospital for patients and significant time away from home and daily activities.
