Development of IOM over the Years,
will take place on Saturday, February 14, 2026 at 11:00 AM (EST)
Dr. Marc Nuwer is a distinguished Professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery at UCLA, in Los Angeles, CA, USA. As IFCN Rules Chair and IFCN Past President, Dr. Nuwer unified the Federation's EEG and EMG activities together into Clinical Neurophysiology. IFCN is excited to have Dr. Nuwer as an ICCN 2026 Plenary Named Lecturer.

Dr. Marc Nuwer will present: Development of IOM over the Years.
Over a half century, intraoperative monitoring (IOM) evolved from a few ideas and pioneering studies to a modern widely used discipline. From its initial EEG and somatosensory evoked potential beginnings, IOM added many diverse techniques.
In this lecture, we review early years, emphasizing evoked potentials as an example. This growth in kinds of techniques was accompanied by a growth in volume of patients receiving IOM.This was accompanied by growth in training programs, eventually becoming a subspecialty of its own. Even after a half century, growth and expansion continues.
