Working with governmental agencies, the association have set up three foundations that support projects in primary and specialist healthcare and such quality assurance initiatives as guidelines and standards.
The Norwegian centre for laboratory services in primary care (NOKLUS) was set up by the NMA in 1992 in order to secure that tests are requested, analysed and interpreted in accordance with defined standards. Ninety-nine per cent of eligible laboratories are part of the programme; over-all quality has increased throughout this decade.
In the hospital-based services, nationwide Breakthrough Series (BTS) have been run since 1998 within the fields of obstetrics (Caesarean section), adult intensive care, elderly in nursing homes and psychiatry, with encouraging results.
