Undergraduate medical education and the residency requirements for permanent licence
Admission to Norwegian faculties of medicine is highly selective. The undergraduate course takes six years to complete and is followed by 1.5 years of supervised residencies before a full medical licence, or licentia practicandi, is granted: one year in a hospital (six months in medicine and six in surgery) and six months in primary health care supervised by a general practitioner.
