Rationale:
When administering injection treatment, the prescribing physician is responsible for determining the indication. The Health Personnel Act allows delegation of treatment, but §5 of the Act sets requirements for the use of assistants. Tasks can only be delegated if the prescriber is qualified to perform them themselves. It is essential that the prescriber makes a professional assessment of both the indication and the assistant’s qualifications before delegating such tasks.
Prescribing without a clear indication increases the risk of overtreatment of musculoskeletal conditions and compromises patient safety. Treatment involving multiple providers raises the risk of errors related to communication and coordination. We encourage our colleagues to exercise caution when prescribing injectable medications based on another provider’s indication.
