MasterClass Ifcn

The Masterclass by IFCN presentations were created in response to a call from IFCN members societies for more high quality, complimentary, online educational content. The series will provide a new presentation every month from top clinical neurophysiologists around the world, and each will include time for discussion with the lecturer following the presentation.

Providing the best in contemporary clinical neurophysiology education delivered in the most optimal format is the primary educational goal of the IFCN. As such, Masterclass by IFCN will be available complimentary to all registrants.

The Masterclass by IFCN presentation:

Professor Eckart Altenmüller will present Neurophysiology of Acquisition and Loss of Skilled Movements in Musicians. Saturday, June 12, 2021 at 8:00 am EDT (2:00 pm CET).

Performing music at a professional level is probably the most demanding of human activities. During skill acquisition, plastic adaptations of the CNS occur at several levels of the central nervous system and can be impressively demonstrated with neurophysiological brain imaging methods. In his contribution, Prof Altenmüller will present new data on functional plasticity in musicians casting some doubt on the quality of “everlasting plasticity” of the brain. He will furthermore demonstrate that motor disturbances such as musician’s dystonia are either linked to psychological traits, or to basal ganglia dysfunction. Here, anxiety, reinvestment and dysfunctional plasticity play an important role. Finally, Prof Altenmüller will present a new model accounting for his findings concerning the triggering factors of musician’s dystonia.
