What is clinical neurophysiology?

Clinical neurophysiology is a medical specialty. Doctors, nurses and technicians working in this field study the central and peripheral nervous systems by recording spontaneous or stimulated bioelectrical activity. It is primarily a diagnostic specialty which plays an important part in many hospital departments. Examples of diseases are epilepsy, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, and other diseases of the brain. In the peripheral nervous system, peripheral neuropathies, nerve entrapments, radiculopathies, myopathies, myositis are examples of diseases diagnosed.

The Norwegian Society of Clinical Neurophysiology

The Norwegian Society of Clinical Neurophysiology is open for medical doctors working with clinical neurophysiology and other doctors who share the interest of this field. The society is a part of The Norwegian Medical Association.

The main tasks for The Norwegian Society of Clinical Neurophysiology are to increase the knowledge about clinical neurophysiology, improve the education of new specialists, advice the health authorities about the need for this service, and to stimulate to research and education within the field. In this way the society contributes significantly to the development of the medical specialty clinical neurophysiology. The Norwegian Society of Clinical Neurophysiology cooperates with other societies, especially the Nordic ones, but also with societies in other countries.

Examination methods

In clinical neurophysiology we use examination methods such as electroencephalography (EEG), electromyography (EMG), nerve conduction studies (NCS), somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP), motor evoked potentials (MEP), brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP), visual evoked potentials (VEP) etc.  If you would like to know more about clinical neurophysiology, or the different techniques we use, please follow these links for further information:
